Director of Communications

Promote participation in democracy

Role Description:

HeadCount, a nonpartisan voter registration organization, is seeking to hire a Director of Communications to oversee its comms efforts both internally and externally. This new position will report to senior leadership. 

This role will collaborate with functions across the organization including policy, artist relations, partnerships, development, marketing, and more, to ensure consistent messaging across the HeadCount universe.  This new and critical role will serve as an in-house expert on all communications and messaging, and be responsible for building + executing external communication strategies.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Build + execute a communications strategy that incorporates:
    • Defining core messaging, and ensuring it’s adhered across the organization.
    • Drafting key messages for campaigns, and sharing with relevant team members. 
    • Building audience-specific communication campaigns to work across platforms. 
  • Ensure key messages are infused in distribution channels including: press, social, email, stakeholder comms, public speaking events, and more.
  • Oversee creation + execution of social strategy, including management of Digital Marketing Manager. This includes social content development, production, posting + analytics analysis.
  • Manage the relationship with our press agency when engaged, handling all requests for data, campaign details, artist questions, press release review, and more. Direct media outreach as needed when an agency is not engaged. 
  • Build + execute a thought-leadership strategy for Executive Director, including seeking speaking opportunities for her, drafting talking points + speeches, op/eds, social media management, and other materials.
  • Collaboration with the Digital Marketing Manager to reinforce brand and impact messaging in social content.
  • Help refine policy focused content + messaging to make it suitable for a social-first audience, in conjunction with policy and social leads. 
  • Draft or edit all blog content, as pitched or assigned by ED and other senior members.
  • Lead crisis communications efforts – both pre-emptive and reactive. 
  • Project manage the annual impact report process including drafting, editing and working with the Art Department on the final format.

Required Experience:

  • At least 7+ years experience managing or helping direct communications at a nonprofit or advocacy organization, or in a communications and content heavy environment (ie, journalism or public relations).
  • Excellent writing + editing skills, specifically with translating policy-dense material into social media and press friendly formats.
  • Proven experience drafting press releases, talking points, messaging briefs, and social content.
  • Comfort working in Canva and other basic design tools (Keynote, Slides, etc.)
  • Project management skills, especially in smaller and flatter organizations.
  • 3 to 4 years experience managing creative people.
  • Excellent personal communication skills and the ability to navigate a grassroots, matrixed organization.
  • A passion for democracy.

Compensation & Benefits:

Full time salaried. FLSA exempt. 

Salary Range: $97,000-$102,000
