Absolutely! You can check your voter registration online on North Carolina’s elections office website here.

It can take several weeks. Most states send out voter registration cards within 5 to 7 weeks after receiving the registration. If you do not receive a registration card in the mail, contact your state election office to confirm you are registered. Find your state’s contact information in our How to Vote in Your State section on this page! In any event, you should verify your registration a week prior to the voter registration deadline in your state in case you need to fill out a new registration form or correct your form.

Elections take place all the time throughout the year, and odds are, you probably have an election coming up in your state! In addition to the presidential election and midterm elections, you have statewide, countywide and municipal elections that you can make your voice heard in. YES you are able to register to vote at your student address. You should provide your official campus mailing address as well as the actual physical address of your on or off campus residence when registering to vote. You must have some sort of proof of address and residency that can be presented at your polling place (mail, a student ID, etc.). For more information, we suggest visiting your state’s elections office website. Remember: you can only register to vote and vote in one place, whether that is your student address or your home address!

YES, unhoused voters can register to vote and use their voice in North Carolina’s elections. Unhoused voters or voters without a permanent address may list a shelter address, street corner, or park as their address. YES. In this case you must register at the last address you had before you left the USA, or at the address to which you will return to when returning to the USA (you must present some indication of a present intent to return and live there – e.g. vehicle registration, driver’s license, property ownership, family, etc). How Vote By Mail Works in North Carolina

Voting by mail is a two step process in North Carolina.

Step 1: Request your ballot NOW. The deadline for your application to be received is seven days before Election Day at 5 p.m.

Step 2: Complete and return your ballot ASAP.

  • Sign your return envelope in the presence of two witnesses or one notary, they must sign it too.
  • Return in person to your county board of elections by Election Day at 7:30 p.m. or to an early voting site during the early voting period.
  • Or stamp and mail your ballot - ballots must be received by Election Day to be counted. NOTE: State law previously allowed ballots to be postmarked on or before Election Day and received within three days after the election. That is no longer the case, they must be received by Election Day.

Witness or Notary Requirement

The absentee ballot return envelope must be signed by 1 notary or 2 witnesses.

Where to Sign Your Ballot

Remember to sign where indicated before returning your ballot.

You must sign the outside of the security envelope!

Make sure to follow the signature and witness instructions. Without the proper signatures, your ballot will be tossed and will not count.

ID Requirements to Vote By Mail

First time voters must submit ID when voting by mail.

ID is required with completed mail-in ballot.

Voters who vote by mail must include a photocopy of an acceptable ID when returning their ballot, or they may complete an ID Exception Form. The voter places the photocopy of ID or ID Exception Form in a pocket on the outside of the ballot container envelope, which is then placed in an outer return envelope to protect the privacy of the voter.

How You Can Return Your Mail-in Ballot

If you return your ballot by mail, you must add postage when mailing in your ballot.

You can also drop off your ballot in person at your local elections office, or early voting locations.

Can Someone Else Return Your Ballot For You?

A near relative or legal guardian may mail or hand-deliver the Return Envelope.

Track Your Ballot

Haven't used your ballot?

You may still vote in person as long as you haven't returned your absentee ballot. Your absentee ballot will be "spoiled" after voting in person. You may simply discard the absentee ballot. There is no need to bring it with to a polling place.

Opportunities to Fix Challenges to Your Ballot

North Carolina does not offer voters a chance to address challenges to their ballot. Your ballot will not count if it is late, or you do not follow directions.

Voter ID

Do Voters Need ID?

A new law went into effect in April 2023, which means that North Carolina voters will now be required to show Photo ID in order to vote.  Your ID must be unexpired or expired less than one year. Valid forms of identification include;

  • North Carolina driver license
  • North Carolina state ID card (also called a non operators ID)
  • US Passport or Passport Card
  • North Carolina voter photo ID card issued by a County Board of Elections
  • North Carolina student ID card approved by the NC Board of Elections
  • Employee ID issued by North Carolina state or local government or charter school approved by the State Board of Elections.
  • Out-of-state driver’s license or ID card (only for use by voters who have registered to vote in North Carolina within 90 days of an election)

You can use the following IDs even if they do not have an issuance or expiration date.

  • Military ID card issued by US Government
  • Veterans ID card issued by US Department of Veterans Affairs
  • Tribal enrollment card

All registered voters may receive a free photo ID from their county board of elections, and any North Carolina resident may receive a free non-driver’s photo ID from the North Carolina DMV.
